2014 C.A.S. Convention Event Report

IMG_4096From all reports C.A.S. Convention was a success on every level. The cast and crew attending, the volunteers and the attendees have all been expressing how much they enjoyed the event held Nov 8-9th, 2014 at the Four Points by Sheraton LAX.

We are very happy to announce that due to the generosity of fans, volunteers and the cast and crew who joined us over the weekend, we raised an impressive $32,000 (approx) for charity!

Each of the guests elected to donate their appearance fee to a charitable cause they nominated and all of our volunteers (Including two of us who flew in from Australia) paid all their own travel and accommodation expenses. Our photographers GeekShot Photography who everyone agreed did an amazing job gave us a big discount, the cast and crew of Castle were generous enough to donate their autographs on many items for the auction and all of the S.H.I.E.L.D. cast present on the day did the same. So, at the end of the day, all income from the event after venue, fees and general expenses were paid went to charity!

The charities supported include (in no particular order):

  • Michael J Fox Parkinsons Research
  • Lupus Foundation
  • Urban Arts Partnership
  • Soldier Stories Entertainment
  • The Fred Hollows Foundation
  • The Anteaus Company
  • KidsCo
  • Royal Free Charity/ Fund 97
  • The Young Storytellers Foundation
  • City Year LA
  • Cocker Connection

BETH7398aI have been asked near constantly since the event ended when the next one will be and all I can say at the moment is, “We’ll see”.  Running an event like this is a huge undertaking and planning it from another country makes it that little bit harder (not to mention my expense to fly over for the event) so it is too soon to commit to another event yet,  but I will say, “It is possible.” If we do hold another event we will most likely try and bring it forward a few weeks into October, we will continue to hold the event in Los Angeles because it is much easier for the cast and crew to commit the time to attend when they don’t have to travel to do so, asking them to give up a few hours as opposed to an entire weekend (or week if international) is much more realistic. That’s not to say we will rule out holding other smaller events elsewhere should the opportunity arise (like we did with Seamus & Juliana Dever when they visited Australia in 2011) but our main event will always be in Los Angeles.

I am so very grateful to all of our guests from Castle and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for giving up their precious free time during the weekend to come and share with fans, thanks Penny Johnson Jerald, Maya Stojan, Arye Gross, Terri Miller, Chad & Dara Creasey, Nick Blood, Reed Diamond, Simon Kassianides, Max Hernandez, Mark Kolpack and Ann Foley. They all work so hard and asking them to give up a few hours of their precious weekend time is no small thing, special thanks to Jon Huertas, Andrew Marlowe and Clark Gregg who I know made time to come to the event despite having other important commitments on the same day. Special thanks also to Seamus Dever who somehow managed to get more than 50 Castle cast and crew members to sign items for our auction. Seamus, you sir, are amazing!

Thanks also to Jason Palmer who had some great art work to share with fans including two brand new pieces finished specifically for our event.

I would also like to thank all of our volunteers, many returning from our last events, for giving up part of their time enjoying the event to help keep everything running smoothly. Thanks to the California Browncoats, I simply couldn’t run the event without them helping take care of all the money coming in from ticket sales, auctions and sales over the weekend. Thanks to Rae who flew herself over from Australia to help me look after the volunteers and guests over the weekend, to Benji who flew in from out of town to help me out and to Dwight who helped MC and plan in advance of the weekend. Thanks to Ryan for running the AV all weekend (you can see from the clips below what a fantastic job he did) and preparing all the material he showed in advance, to Nikki for helping encourage fans to part with their money during the auctions and to Cheryl & Debby and Stephanie who helped with preparation in the days leading up to the weekend and put up with my stressed state of mind and the other 15+ volunteers who helped out with registration, line management and general duties over the weekend. We simply can’t run this event without the help of our wonderful team of volunteers and from the bottom of my heart I thank you all!

Thanks also to each person who attended and to those who dug deep to bid on items in the auctions.  We do have a few items left to auction and will be putting those on ebay soon. Funds from the auctions will be added to the total raised over the event weekend.

Here are a few clips from the event, we’re working on releasing a DVD and will have more information available at a later date.
